Philip Hollobone, a member of parliament (MP) from Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative party, wants to see a French-style ban on women covering their faces in public, although his bill stands little chance of becoming law.

However, in his own constituency of Kettering in central England, he is demanding that women who wear veils and want to meet with him at his constituency surgeries remove them.

“If she said: ‘No’, I would take the view that she could see my face, I could not see hers, I am not able to satisfy myself she is who she says she is,” he told the Independent newspaper.

“I would invite her to communicate with me in a different way, probably in the form of a letter.”

He added: “God gave us faces to be expressive. It is not just the words we utter but whether we are smiling, sad, angry or frustrated. You don’t get any of that if your face is covered.”

There are around 400 Muslims living in Kettering, according to the local Muslim association, out of a total population in the town of over 50,000.

Hollobone has also tabled a bill in parliament to regulate certain face coverings, although it will not be debated until December and is highly unlikely to become law due to lack of government support.

This week, French lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to ban the wearing of face-covering veils in public in a bill which will now go to the Senate for approval.

A poll out Friday found that two-thirds of Britons would support a similar ban.

In 2006, former foreign secretary Jack Straw sparked fierce debate by saying he asked Muslim women to lift their veils during meetings with him in his constituency.

Neither Bronislaw Komorowski nor Jaroslaw Kaczynski won more than 50% in the first round on 20 June.

Observers say the final result could be close.

Mr Komorowski has been acting president since his predecessor, Mr Kaczynski’s twin brother Lech, was killed in a plane crash as he travelled to Russia.

Poland’s first couple and 94 other people died when their plane came down in Smolensk on 10 April as they flew to attend a memorial ceremony for the World War II Katyn massacre.

The Kenyan bowed his head as his captors opened the prison cell door to deliver another brutal whipping – a punishment meted out after he was accused of taking part in the independence movement against the British colonial authorities.

The man had been working as a cook for a British Army officer. And his name? Hussein Onyango Obama – President Barack Obama’s paternal grandfather.

He had been arrested in 1949 and jailed for two years in a high-security prison. There, according to his family, he was subjected to horrific violence. They say British soldiers used torture in an effort to get him to reveal rebel secrets.

‘The African warders were instructed by the white soldiers to whip him every morning and evening till he repented,’ says Sarah Onyango, Hussein Onyango’s third wife, and the woman President Obama calls ‘Granny Sarah’.

Mrs Onyango, now 89, says ‘white soldiers’ visited the prison every two or three days to carry out ‘disciplinary action’ on the inmates in, what she terms, ‘the British torture chambers’.

She details awful abuse. ‘They would squeeze his private parts (testicles) with parallel metallic rods. They also pierced his nails and buttocks with a sharp pin, with his hands and legs tied together with his head facing down,’ she says.

‘There were beatings and torture. That was the time we realised that the British were actually not friends but, instead, enemies. My husband had worked so diligently for them, only to be arrested and detained. He called the British “beasts and traitors in human skin”.’

This week, she told the Mail in an exclusive interview that she believes that learning of the torture meted out to his grandfather turned her grandson, the U.S. President, against Britain. Sitting under a mango tree in the garden of her modest home in Kogelo village, Kenya, surrounded by the family’s chickens, cows and goat, she recalls telling Barack Obama his family history on his first visit to Kenya in 1988.

‘I narrated the whole story to Barack one evening to help him understand our family’s past. He wasn’t amused at all. He expressed quite a lot of concern about why the British had to punish his grandfather “on his own soil”.

‘He said the whole act sounded barbaric. He wondered why the British never respected African culture. The arrest, he said, was outrageous.’ Shockingly, she adds: ‘Generally, my grandson has never believed the British do anything for a common good, rather than their selfish interests.’

Did British soldiers really torture President Obama’s grandfather? As we will see, some elements of this highly emotive story have been twisted through the passage of time.

But whatever the truth, these bitter tales form part of the Obama family folklore, and seem to have left the U.S. President with a vehemently anti-British outlook.

So has Obama’s memory of his grandfather’s treatment influenced his aggressive reaction to BP over its handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill?

The Pakistan government blocked access to YouTube today in protest at its ‘sacrilegious’ content.

The move comes just a day after the country blocked Facebook in outrage over a page that encouraged users to submit images of the Prophet Mohammed.

The government is challenging the power of the world wide web in a growing crackdown against sites deemed offensive to the country’s majority Muslim population.

Today access to encyclopaedia site Wikipedia and photo-sharing site Flickr was also restricted. But resourceful internet users simply switched to micro-blogging site Twitter to broadcast their protests against the crackdown to the world.

However, there are fears today that Twitter could become the next target as Pakistani traffic to the site surged.

This recent rash of rumors about the alleged Illuminati ties of people like Jay-Z,  Rihanna, Oprah and whoever else has got to be one of the corniest trends in rap ever. This is easily the corniest shit since the “Stop Snitching” debate. Are you all fucking serious with this shit? The business of government has continued, including concerted action in Europe today to avert the financial crisis in the euro area.

Alistair Darling, the chancellor, spent much of his time yesterday at the European finance ministers’ meeting in Brussels.

This morning, I had conversations with the president of the European Council, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund and the president of the European Central Bank.

I have said I would do all I could to ensure that a stable, strong and principled government is formed, able to tackle Britain’s economic and political challenges effectively.

As we know, the Liberal Democrats felt they should first talk to the Conservative party. Mr Clegg has just informed me that, while he intends to continue his dialogue that he has begun with the Conservatives, he now wishes also to take forward formal discussions with the Labour party.

I believe it is sensible and it is in the national interest to respond positively.

The cabinet will meet soon. A formal policy negotiating process is being established under the arrangements made by the cabinet secretary, similar to the negotiations between other parties.

The first priority should be an agreed deficit reduction plan to support economic growth and a return to full employment.

I know that both parties recognise the importance of ensuring economic stability in the markets and protecting Britain’s standing and both are agreed on the need for a strong and full deficit reduction plan over the coming years.

Mr Yar’Adua, who became president in 2007, had been ill for some time.  Yar’Adua had not been seen in public since November, when he went to Saudi Arabia for treatment of an inflammation of tissue around his heart. He was diagnosed with that condition, acute pericarditis, last fall after he complained of chest pain.

He returned to Nigeria in February but had remained out of sight.  He died after months of battling with a heart ailment. He is to be buried on Thursday.

Yar’Adua died between 9:30 and 10:30 pm (2030 and 2130 GMT) Wednesday, several local media reported.

Mr Yar’Adua is to be buried later on Thursday in his native northern Katsina home state of Katsina, in the north of the country according to Muslim rites.. The presidency has declared seven days of national mourning, Reuters news agency said.

The Nigerian Television Authority interrupted its normal programming to announce the news, in a brief statement early on Thursday.

The announcer said: “The president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, died a few hours ago at the presidential villa.

“Security aides notified the national security adviser, General Anou Bissou, who immediately called the acting president. The late president has been ill for some time.”

Reports from Nigeria said Mr Yar’Adua died between 2100 (2000 GMT) and 2200 (2100 GMT) on Wednesday in the capital, Abuja.

David Kernell, the son of a Democratic Tennessee lawmaker, was convicted yesterday on two charges of hacking into Sarah Palin’s e-mail account while she campaigned on the Republican presidential ticket in 2008

After four days of deliberations, a federal jury found David Kernell, the 22-year-old son of a Democratic Tennessee state legislator, guilty of obstruction of justice, a felony, and unauthorised access of a computer, a misdemeanor.

Kernell was cleared of a wire fraud charge, and the jury could not agree on a verdict on a charge of identity theft.

Judge Thomas Phillips declared a mistrial on the identity theft charge but did not set a date for sentencing.

The obstruction charge alone carries a prison sentence of up to 20 years, while the misdemeanor count is punishable by up to one year in jail.

Palin issued a statement on her Facebook page, thanking the jury and prosecutors and explaining the case’s importance.

“Besides the obvious invasion of privacy and security concerns surrounding this issue, many of us are concerned about the integrity of our country’s political elections. America’s elections depend upon fair competition,” the statement said.

“Violating the law, or simply invading someone’s privacy for political gain, has long been repugnant to Americans’ sense of fair play. As Watergate taught us, we rightfully reject illegally breaking into candidates’ private communications for political intrigue in an attempt to derail an election.”

A subdued Kernell had no comment, and he was released on bond while barred from using a computer except for school assignments and e-mail.

MOSCOW — Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country’s highest military and civilian leaders died on Saturday when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia, killing 96, officials said.

Russian and Polish officials said there were no survivors on the 26-year-old Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland’s political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

It was not expected to directly affect the functioning of Polish government, however: Poland’s president is commander in chief of its armed forces but the position’s domestic duties are chiefly symbolic. The prime minister and other top government ministers were not aboard the plane.

Poland has long discussed replacing the planes that carry the country’s leaders but said they lacked the funds. The presidential Tu-154 had been overhauled in December in Russia, officials said.

Russia’s Emergency Ministry said there were 96 dead, 88 part of a Polish state delegation. Poland’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Piotr Paszkowski, said there were 89 people on the passenger list but one person had not shown up for the roughly 1 1/2-hour flight from Warsaw’s main airport.

Poland’s parliament speaker, the acting president, declared a week of national mourning.

“We still cannot fully understand the scope of this tragedy and what it means for us in the future. Nothing like this has ever happened in Poland,” Paszkowski said. “We can assume with great certainty that all persons on board have been killed.”

The plane tilted to the left before crashing, eyewitness Slawomir Sliwinski told Rossiya-24. He said there were two loud explosions when the aircraft hit the ground.

The Pakistani military on Sunday was looking into a local report that the region’s Taliban leader had died, officials said.

State broadcaster PTV reported that Hakimullah Mehsud, the Taliban commander in Pakistan, was wounded in a drone attack this month, and that he died and was buried last week. PTV cited local sources and its correspondent in North Waziristan.

Mehsud has been the target of suspected U.S. drone attacks in Pakistan. The U.S. military routinely offers no comment on reported attacks by the pilotless aircraft.

The Taliban leader’s status came into question following two drone attacks aimed at him this month.

U.S. counterterrorism officials contacted by CNN Sunday could not confirm whether Mehsud is dead or injured.

A new professional basketball league called the All-American Basketball Alliance (AABA) sent out a press release on Sunday saying that it intends to start its inaugural season in June, with teams in 12 U.S. cities. However, the AABA is different from other sports leagues because only players who are “natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league.” AABA commissioner Don “Moose” Lewis insists that he’s not racist, but he just wants to get away from the “street-ball” played by “people of color” and back to “fundamental basketball.” Lewis cited the recent incidents of bad behavior by NBA players, implying that such actions would never happen with white players.

“There’s nothing hatred about what we’re doing,” he said. “I don’t hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.” [...]

He pointed out recent incidents in the NBA, including Gilbert Arenas’ indefinite suspension after bringing guns into the Washington Wizards locker room, as examples of fans’ dissatisfaction with the way current professional sports are run.

“Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?” he said. “That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.”

In 1999, the Somali Maritime and Fisheries Institute published a paper describing in detail how factory ships from developed and developing nations were pillaging Somalia’s fishery:

The illegal fishing vessels stay in deeper waters during the day but come closer to the shore at night. They apply their destructive fishing techniques, which reduce the local population’s harvest and damage nets and traps set by local fishermen.

The report gave a list of the countries of origin of the offending boats: China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Honduras, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Pakistan, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Soviet Federation, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Yemen. The authors warned: ‘This is a critical time for the world at large, in particular international organisations, to integrate Somali people with their environment and safeguard their natural resources.

But fishing isn’t the only form of aggression into Somali waters. Since the early 1990s ships from industrialised countries have been dumping nuclear and chemical waste into Somali waters. A Swiss firm called Achair Parterns, and an Italian waste company called Progresso — allegedly contracted to respectable European companies — made a deal with Ali Mahdi, one of the warlords who took over power after the overthrow of Siyad Barre, that they could dump containers of waste material in Somali waters. Al Madhi was said to be charging about $3 a ton, whereas to properly dispose of waste in Europe costs about $1000 a ton.

As is so often the case with pirates, one is tempted to admire them for their spirit more than one condemns them for their avarice. But it is hard to feel any sympathy for the governments of the world and shipping fleets who have been so embarrassed by this marine resistance movement — they had it coming.?

They warn that Israel does not have the firepower to deliver a knockout blow to Iran’s perceived drive for nuclear weapons and faces a potentially withering Iranian retaliation the likes of which they have never endured before.

“It must be stated plainly: Israel does not have independent strike capability against Iran — not in the broad sense of the term,” Amos Harel wrote in the liberal daily Haaretz Wednesday.

“The air force is capable of delivering a certain amount of explosives to a given target and bringing most of its aircraft back home intact.

“But it is doubtful whether Israel can allow itself to act against the wishes of the United States — to stand alone against an Iranian response and begin an open-ended operation against a nation of 70 million people,” Harel wrote.

“It is best to disabuse ourselves of illusions about our ability to dictate a New Middle East order.

“That is the lesson learned, in blood, by Menachem Begin and Ariel Sharon in Lebanon in 1982 and by George W. Bush in Iraq in 2003.”

Harel and others argue that the time to hit Iran’s nuclear infrastructure was several years ago, simply by taking out the uranium conversion plant at Isfahan, in central Iran, not now that the nuclear sites have been widely dispersed, buried deep underground and ringed by air-defense missiles.

It is suggested that since the Israeli military has been given a large budget increase to counter the Iranian threat it feels it must “persuade the political echelon that it can do the job” or watch the funding go elsewhere.

Retired Maj. Gen. Issac Ben-Israel says, “If there’s no choice, Israel can set back the Iranian nuclear process” — even if it can’t mount the sustained campaign that would be required to cripple it.

Ben-Israel knows what he’s talking about. He was a specialist in air force operations who helped plan the long-range Israeli strike that knocked out Saddam Hussein’s French-built Osirak reactor in June 1981.

Many see that raid as the touchstone for a similar attack against Iran. What they forget is that involved a single target, was much closer to Israel than Iran, and took only eight F-16 strike jets to destroy — even if it did not stifle Saddam’s nuclear ambitions.

Hitting widespread targets in Iran will require much of Israel’s air force, including all nine of its aerial tankers to refuel up to 90-100 raiding jets flying at the limit of their capabilities and do that over several days.

Ben-Israel estimates that Iran would retaliate with volleys of its Shehab-3B ballistic missiles, mainstay of its strategic missile forces, and possibly even some of the more accurate Sajjil-2 missiles.

About 80 would hit the Jewish state, he estimates. That’s twice the number of more primitive Soviet-designed Scuds that Saddam lobbed into Israel during the 1991 Gulf War.

Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Gaza Strip would undoubtedly join in with shorter-range missiles. Hezbollah is reputed to have in excess of 42,000 rockets of various calibers, Hamas far fewer, but some of these can now strike deep inside Israel.

“Israel will survive an Iranian missile attack and a rain of rockets from Lebanon,” Ben-Israel observed.

But, he warned, an Israeli strike against Iran “also carries strategic costs, which will only be aggravated if the operation against Iran does not succeed.”

“Israel will be denounced as a militant and aggressive state, the price of oil will soar, America and its allies in the Gulf are liable to be adversely affected — and worst of all, Iran will be perceived as the victim of Israeli aggression and will obtain international legitimization to renew the devastated nuclear project.”

On top of all this, Ben-Israel, and even the air force commander, Maj. Gen. Ido Nehushtan, point out that the multilayered missile defense shield Israel is putting together, and which is still incomplete, is not capable of countering a coordinated missile bombardment from several directions.

Despite the “massive media coverage” given to the missile shield, “it is worth recalling that most of its components exist only on paper,” Ben-Israel concluded.

“In every scenario of warfare projected for the years ahead, many more missiles will be fired at Israel than can be intercepted by its anti-missile system.”

A distraught father had to make the hardest decision of his life – choosing to save the life of his drowning wife over his son, who was trapped in a submerged car.

Silva Natana Horton, 13, drowned in the Whanganui River on Saturday night after the car in which he was a front-seat passenger went off Somme Pde and cartwheeled down a steep 10-metre bank into the water about 9.45pm.

His mother, Vanessa Horton, who was driving, Silva’s best friend, Robert Palmer, 14, and the family dog escaped with minor injuries.

Silva’s father, Stacy Horton, arrived from their home in nearby Stewart St less than two minutes after the crash to hear his wife screaming in the darkness and to see Robert and the dog scrambling up the bank.

He clambered down and saw his wife in the water. He tried to dive down to their Mazda MPV stationwagon, which was nose down, more than a metre beneath the surface.

“I tried to get down and get him but I couldn’t, it was just too deep. And Vanessa was going under,” Mr Horton said.

“I made a call to pull my wife to safety. I looked back and I could see the tail-lights but it was too far and I couldn’t get him.

“I just had to accept the fact that he had gone.

“Instead of going down and risking my life as well as my wife and son’s, I chose to take V back and sat on the shore praying. It was all I could do.”

When emergency services arrived minutes later, police also dived in, with two firefighters using breathing apparatus – a full face-mask with oxygen tank backpacks normally used in smoke-filled buildings – to try to reach Silva.

Wanganui senior station officer Gary Wilson said the water was dark and murky and the firefighters struggled to reach the car.

“We tried everything but to no avail. It was a longshot but it was worth the risk to try and save him.”

Mr Horton said the family had been at home when a group of kids was heard wrecking their letterbox.

The group ran off and his wife, Silva and Robert quickly followed them in the car.

As Mrs Horton slowly pulled over to talk to the group by the riverbank, the car “kept going” on the grass.

“I do know my son was unconscious when he drowned [after hitting his head on the dash]. It’s just a freak accident. We can’t blame anyone.

“I’ve forgiven the kids who were wrecking our letterbox,” Mr Horton said.

“My wife is emotionally distraught and drained, like I am.”

Divers recovered Silva’s body early yesterday. His funeral will be held in Taihape.

Mr Horton said Silva was an outgoing boy, who liked to spin a yarn, and was a budding moto-cross rider who won his age grade competition in Wanganui this year.

Miss England has been forced to relinquish her crown after an alleged duel with a rival beauty queen over a TV Gladiator. Rachel Christie, niece of Olympic gold medallist Linford Christie, stepped down after being accused of punching Miss Manchester, Sara Beverley Jones, 24, in the face during a night out at a nightclub.

Trouble allegedly flared after Miss Jones showed Miss Christie a message on her phone claiming that it was sent to her by Miss Christie’s boyfriend, David McIntosh, who appears as Tornado in the Sky One television show Gladiators.

Miss Jones, who was dressed as a cavewoman, was taken to hospital, where she was treated for “superficial facial injuries”.

Miss Christie, 21, was arrested on suspicion of assault and released on bail pending a hearing in January.

The model and athlete, who hopes to win a gold medal at the 2012 Olympics in the heptathlon, has also quit the race to become Miss World to concentrate on clearing her name.

Last night a statement on the Miss England website read: “Due to the media attention following the allegations against her, Rachel Christie has now decided to withdraw from the Miss World competition and relinquish her Miss England crown. Rachel will concentrate on clearing her name and focus on training for the 2012 Olympics until this case is resolved.”

Miss Christie, who was dressed as an angel at the time of the alleged fracas, had been due to leave for the Miss World contest in South Africa next Tuesday. Police were called to the Mansion club in Manchester shortly before 1am on Monday.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “It is believed that, earlier that night, a 24-year-old woman got into an altercation with another woman in the club and was hit in the face several times.

It is believed that Mr McIntosh, a 15st former Royal Marine, is a former boyfriend of Miss Manchester.

Miss Christie was the first black woman to be crowned Miss England. When she won the title in July, she pledged to be a role model for black youth. “One of my reasons for doing Miss England in the first place was because I wanted to show people, the younger generation especially, that you can do something positive with your life,” Miss Christie had said, adding that she had turned to modelling to fund her training.

“Whoever you are, you can be who you want and whatever you want.”

Her father, Russell, had been a promising athlete but was arrested for theft and stabbed to death during a drugs-related dispute in 1996. Four years earlier, he had been jailed for attacking a former lover.

Mr McIntosh cites Rambo as his greatest inspiration and says he likes to “chill out with a cup of green tea” in preparation for his television battles.

Miss Christie has been replaced as Miss England by Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge, who came second in the pageant. Miss Hodge, 22, who was awarded a commendation from her unit, the 1st Batallion, Royal Anglian Regiment, for her actions during a posting in 2005 in Basra, has been given leave from her duties as a soldier to appear in the Miss World final.
